What is child identity theft?

Child Identity theft happens when someone uses a child’s social security number and other personal information to do destructive actions, such as opening up credit accounts, applying for a car loan or mortgage which could result in lots of debt for the child. A thief could even apply for a job and collect government benefits using your child’s personal information. Child Identity theft could go undetected for years and is not usually discovered until the child becomes an adult and is ready to establish credit. 


How does Protect My Kids ID (PMKID) protect my child’s identity?

We freeze your child’s credit report at all 3 credit bureaus which will prevent an identity thief from obtaining any type of credit using your child’s social security number (SSN).


What information will I need to enroll my child in Protect My Kids ID?

All required data and documents can be easily uploaded to our secure website:

  • Clear copy of Child’s Social Security Card

  • Copy of child’s birth certificate 

  • Copy of your driver’s license or a government issued ID

  • Copy of a utility bill, bank or insurance statement

If you are the child’s guardian, please also provide one of the following:

  • Copy of court order naming you the guardian

  • Valid power of attorney

  • Foster Care Certification


How can I upload the required documents?

Using your Smartphone, Tablet, or Computer you can upload all of the necessary documents.


How long will it take to enroll? 

Enrollment is quick and easy.  All that is needed is your name, email address, phone number and form of payment. Once enrollment is complete it will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete the enrollment form and upload the required documents.


How long will it take to receive the PIN numbers from the Credit Bureaus.

You will receive a PIN number from each of the credit bureaus which will be mailed to your home within 3-4 weeks. 


How do I unfreeze my child’s credit?

Each credit bureau will mail you a confirmation letter containing a unique PIN code with instructions on how to unfreeze your child’s credit. Your PIN codes can be stored on our website in your dashboard.


How long does a credit freeze last?

The freeze lasts until you want to remove it, or your child can remove it once they turn 18. The PIN numbers will be required to remove the credit freeze. 


Can I still freeze my child’s credit if he/she does not have a credit file with any of the credit bureaus?

Yes!  Protect My Kids ID  will ask for a credit file to be created and then the bureaus can put a freeze on their file. 


Is my information secure?

Yes, your private information is safe and sound. Our system collects the necessary data to initiate the freeze. We temporarily store the data in an encoded format which is transmitted over the internet and is fully encrypted via HTTPS protocol. So, there is no possibility of the data being accessed. Once the child's form is submitted and the credit freeze has been requested, the data and forms are completely deleted.
